     PRESS RELEASE

POLICE SHUT DOWN ILLEGAL BAR
September 21, 2009

City of Middletown Police arrested a Middletown man after he was found serving alcohol without a license to patrons of an illegal bar on Wickham Ave early Sunday morning.

Middletown Police developed information that the Madison Lounge had opened at 130 Wickham Ave, and was operating without a liquor license from New York State. Clevon Elliott, 48, of Middletown, was charged with Sale of Alcohol Without a License, a violation of the Alcoholic Beverage Control law.

Police had developed information about the bar opening and were able to locate advertisements for the new bar on the internet. When police arrived just after midnight, they found approximately 100 patrons inside of the bar. Elliott was found behind the bar selling alcohol to the patrons.

The case was also referred to the Building Inspectors Office and additional charges could be filed.

Elliott was released pending an appearance in Middletown City Court on September 25.

The City of Middletown Police Department, which is the second largest police department in Orange County, started serving the residents of Middletown in 1888.
