November 12, 2009 Violent crime continues to fall in the latest statistics released by the City of Middletown Police. Middletown police, utilizing crime analysis, increased enforcement techniques and expanded community policing patrols, has decreased violent crime 22% over last year. Through October 31, all violent crime categories have decreased over last year. Murder is down 80%, Rape 40%, Robbery 25%, Burglary 14% and Aggravated Assault is down 14%. Another notable decrease is in the number of motor vehicle thefts which have dropped 48%. There were 42 thefts through October last year while this year there has been only 22. “The plans that we have put in place are working as we continue to see decreases in violent crime in the city”, said Middletown Police Chief Matthew Byrne. “The credit goes to entire department and the public continues to benefit.” In 2008 the city experienced five homicides through October while this year there has been one. Middletown police have increased arrests 10% over last year. Through October police have made 2750 arrests compared to 2494 in 2008. Traffic tickets issued has increased 30% over last year with 5586 being issued. This is more than the number of tickets issued in any entire year in the history of the city. The City of Middletown Police Department, which is the second largest police department in Orange County, started serving the residents of Middletown in 1888.
