Appointments & Applications

Marriage licenses are issued by appointment through the City Clerk's Office. Both parties must appear in person to apply for the marriage license. The fee for a marriage license is $40, payable in cash, check/money order, and made payable to The City of Middletown. Credit/debit cards are accepted.

Marriage licenses may be issued to: persons 18 years of age and over with appropriate identification. Marriage involving a minor under 17 years of age is prohibited by the new law. Issuance of a Marriage License to a minor at least 17 years of age but under 18 years of age requires approval of both parents and written approval of a justice of the Supreme Court or of a judge of the family court having jurisdiction over the town or city in which the application is made.

Please email the following documents along with your expected wedding date:

  • You must provide one of the following proofs of age and identity:
    • Original or certified copy of your birth certificate
    • Original or certified copy of naturalization papers
  • In addition to the previous list, you must also provide one of the following identity-related documents:
    • Current driver's license
    • Passport
    • Immigration record
    • Military identification card or other government issued identification
  • If either party has a previous marriage you must have the following:
    • Original/Certified copies of any/all divorce papers must be provided
    • Certified copy of death certificate of former spouse must be provided
  • Documents that will not be accepted include those that are:
    • Defaced
    • Taped
    • Laminated
    • Photocopied
    • Expired
    • Ripped

Also note that Social Security Cards are not an acceptable form of identification.

Translation Services

All documents must be in English or must be translated by a certified translator. A translation that is notarized is not a certified document. Certified translators:

Important Notes

All documents will be reviewed to ensure that they adequately meet the purpose of identifying the applicant. If you are unsure about your identification documents, please call the City Clerk's Office.

The marriage license is not good for the first 24 hours after it is issued; the license only remains valid for 60 days after issuance.
